Statue of Suppression

"Statue of Suppression" is an evocative sculpture representing the profound struggles faced by women in Mexico. This artwork captures the essence of a female figure trapped by her harsh surroundings, symbolizing the pervasive environment of crime, misogyny, and societal insecurities that confine many women daily. The piece reflects the high rate of missing women in Mexico, a stark reality that often leads to a state of deep depression.

The woman in "Statue of Suppression" is transformed into a concrete cube, a metaphor for the freezing effect of depression and the static state imposed by external pressures. Her face, etched with sadness, tells a silent story of unfulfilled dreams and lost freedoms. The sculpture's surface features a poem about freedom, inscribed on one side, juxtaposed with clouds symbolizing nonexistent freedom. Traces of feminine standards are subtly embedded within the concrete, highlighting the societal expectations that further constrain her.

This poignant piece was strategically placed in a suburban area to observe public interaction and provoke reflection on the often-overlooked struggles of women.
